With the holiday season wrapped up and everyone returning to normal routines, some seniors are at a higher risk for developing SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or other serious symptoms of wintertime depression. Especially vulnerable are those seniors who are unable to get out of the house or outside of a community setting to enjoy social activities or family events, and those who are generally more affected by the lack of sunlight. Immobility and vitamin D deficiency can compound symptoms of SAD, so it’s important to pay close attention to seniors affected by these issues. Learning to identify and address both SAD and depression early on is helpful in supporting seniors to feel happier and more like themselves again. (more…)

We’re excited to share that New Century Home Care (NCHC) has achieved distinctive results following the New York State Department of Health’s last survey of the agency.  The department conducted a survey during an unannounced visit at the end of November. The results are quite unusual – NCHC was given a ‘No Deficiencies’ rating, which is not a regular occurrence for most health care agencies!

“It was very gratifying to pass our survey in November by the DOH with flying colors,” said Mrs. Scharf, President of New Century Home Care. “We are dedicated to providing quality care to all our clients while maintaining the highest standards of compliance with all Department of Health policies and regulations.”

As part of the survey process, the New York State Department of Health reviewed a number of our health records and policies and also interviewed New Century Home Care’s Administrator Allen Spielman. (more…)

With many social gatherings, the festive season is often a time of celebration and cheer; but it can also become an isolating time for seniors – especially those who live alone or further away. The disruption of everyone’s normal schedules may mean less frequent visits and phone calls, and hectic planning and events can potentially cause us to forget to check in with our loved ones. It’s natural to miss a phone call or visit here and there, but it’s important to make sure that seniors have the support and resources they need to stay healthy and protected over the holidays. It’s the season for giving thanks, not only to others but also to ourselves. This is a special time to focus on being thankful for our health, family and friends, and new experiences throughout the year. However, as we age it can be more difficult to feel that gratitude, especially with unexpected losses and health issues. These problems can make it hard to move forward mentally and can prevent us from staying active and mobile.

Despite these challenges, it’s important to find positive things to feel thankful for this season and throughout the year. Studies consistently show us that the simple act of gratitude – of feeling deeply grateful for something – has a real effect on our physiology. According to an article published by Forbes, “A growing body of research finds that gratitude can have a lasting impact on health. It can boost the immune system, improve sleep and combat the negative effects of stress. When we think about what we appreciate, our body responds by increasing oxytocin, the feel-good hormone.”

What does healthcare quality mean to you? For many it means offering a standard level of care for all seniors and working towards better treatments, procedures and ongoing quality checks that protect everyone. September is Healthy Aging Month and September 23^rd is Falls Prevention Day. This is doubly important to recognize, because preventing falls has a lot to do with healthy aging and keeping up, as much as possible, with flexibility, balance, and strength. Caregivers and seniors might get a little bored when it’s hot out. After all, the heat is especially hard on older adults. If you or a loved one have a health condition that is aggravated by the heat, it might be necessary to stay indoors or closely monitor your temperature. That doesn’t need to limit you though.
